The Label Says Cotton — But What Does That Actually Mean?

Walk through any clothing store and you'll see it everywhere: "100% cotton," "pure cotton," "all cotton." Some brands will even try to convince you these terms mean different things — and that the more expensive one is somehow superior. Here's the truth: they don't.

Under China's national standard GB/T 29862-2013, Article 6, there is exactly one rule: if a product is made from a single fiber type, you can label it with "100%" before or after the fiber name, or use "pure" or "all" before it. So yes — pure cotton equals all cotton equals 100% cotton.

That said, there's an important nuance. Article 7 of the same standard allows decorative threads or specialty fibers (like the elastic in a ribbed collar or the stitching on a sleeve) to make up to 5% of the total composition without disqualifying the garment from a "100% cotton" claim. Think of lace trim, embroidered patches, or binding tape — these small non-cotton elements are standard practice and don't compromise the garment's primary fiber identity.

How to Read a Clothing Safety Label

Every garment sold in regulated markets carries a safety classification. These aren't optional — they're mandatory and tell you exactly where and how a garment is safe to wear.

  • Class A — Infant products. The strictest standard. Safe for babies and toddlers under 36 months.
  • Class B — Products that come into direct contact with adult skin. This is the standard for t-shirts, hoodies, and most everyday streetwear.
  • Class C — Products not intended for direct skin contact. Think outerwear linings or decorative overlays.

If you're buying a hoodie or tee, look for Class B on the label. It means the fabric has passed formaldehyde limits, pH balance tests, and colorfastness standards that make it safe for all-day wear against your skin.

Not All Cotton Is Created Equal

Cotton quality varies dramatically by fiber length, processing method, and weave. Here's what matters when you're evaluating a piece:

Fiber types:

  • Short-staple cotton — Rough, pills easily, and has largely been phased out of quality production.

The Environmental Reality Check

Cotton carries a reputation as a "natural" fiber, but the reality is more complicated. Conventional cotton farming is water-intensive (roughly 2,700 liters per t-shirt). The bleaching, dyeing, and finishing stages involve significant chemical inputs — and the wastewater from textile dyeing is one of the largest industrial polluters globally.

A single cold-water cycle removes most surface residues and dramatically reduces the risk of contact dermatitis. It's the simplest quality-control step in your wardrobe routine, and it costs almost nothing.

Bottom Line

Pure cotton and all cotton are the same thing — don't let anyone upcharge you on semantics. What actually matters: the fiber length, the weave, the finish, the safety class, and whether the brand can tell you where the fabric came from.
